On the western coast of India, lives the grand state of Gujarat is the ninth-largest Indian state by population, with 60.4 million souls. Resting on the Kathiawar peninsula, Gujarat has a coastline of 1,600 km (990 mi), making it the fifth-largest state in India by area.

In the Maurya and Gupta empires, during the succession of the Royal Saka dynasties of the Western-Satraps era, Gujarat’s coastal towns such as Bharuch and Khambhat served as ports and trade centres.

Gujarat shares its borders with: 

  • Rajasthan on the north-east,
  • Madhya Pradesh to the east,
  • Maharashtra to the south-east, 
  • Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu to the south, and, 
  • the Arabian Sea and the Pakistani province of Sindh to the west. 

Gujarat is also one of the three Indian states with Bihar and Nagaland, to ban the sale of alcohol. The Gujarat Gir Forest National Park is home to the world’s only population of a wild Asian lion.

History of Gujarat

Gujarat Tourism 2Gujarat’s history started with the settlements of the Stone Age followed by settlements of the Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages, like the Indus Valley Civilisation.

The Nanda, Maurya, Satavahana and Gupta realms, as well as the Western Kshatrapas period, were served as ports and trading centres by Gujarat’s coastal areas like Bharuch.

Gujarat thrived as an autonomous Hindu/Buddhist state after the decline of the Gupta empire in the 6th century. 

From the 6th to the 8th centuries, the Maitraka dynasty which are descendants of Gupta generals, ruled from their capital at Vallabhi, however, in the 7th century, they were ruled shortly by the Harsha.

In 770, the Maitraka dynasty was brought to an end when the Arab rulers of Sindh looted Vallabhi. From the 8th to 10th centuries, Gujarat state was controlled by the Gurjara-Pratihara Empire. 

The area came under the administration of the Rashtrakuta Empire and Pala Empire for some short periods, as well. The first Parsi (Zoroastrian) evacuees came to Gujarat from Greater Iran in 775.

The regional Chaulukya dynasty came to power during the 10th century. Anhilwara was defeated and Gujarat was merged into the Delhi Sultanate by the Turkic Sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khalji, from 1297 to 1300.

At the end of the 14th century, the governor of Gujarat, Zafar Khan Muzaffar, declared his independence, and his son, Sultan Ahmad Shah I (1411-1442), restructured Ahmedabad as the capital after Timur’s plundering of Delhi weakened the Sultanate. 

Until 1576, the Sultanate of Gujarat continued independently, when the Mughal ruler Akbar won it and joined it to the Mughal Empire as a state. Surat became the notable and principal port of India during Mughal reign.

In 1960, present Gujarat was crafted out by dividing the Bombay state based on linguistics. The Indian National Congress grasped its control in Gujarat Legislative assembly from 1960 to 1995 while in the 1970s and 1990, other parties ruled for incomplete terms. Since 1998, the Bharatiya Janata Party has been in power.

Regional Languages And Religions of Gujarat

The official language of the state is Gujarati, spoken by 86% of the people or roughly 52 million people (as of 2011) of Gujarat.

According to the 2001 census, 4.8% speak Bhili, 4.7% speak Hindi, 1.9% speak Sindhi, 1.5% speak Marathi, and 1.1% speak Urdu in the state of Gujarat. 

Some other regional languages include Kutchi, Memondi, Arabic, Farsi, Gamit, English, Marwari, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Oriya, And Malayalam.

Although the natives speak Gujarati more often, Hindi is widely understood throughout the state, as well as, English is also popularly known in some cities.

Also, 89.09% of the state’s people follow Hinduism, 9.06% follow Islam and 1.84% follow other religions.

Famous National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries of Gujarat

Gujarat is famous for its Gir Forest National Park which is one of the four National Parks in Gujarat. It is home to some of the last remaining Asiatic lions in the world.

The Forest Department of Gujarat also hosts twenty-three wildlife sanctuaries alongside the four national parks. Let’s find out what these are.

National Parks in Gujarat:

1.Gir Forest National Park

It is a wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, established to protect Asiatic lions who haunt the fenced-off Devalia Safari Park, with leopards and antelopes.

Outside the fenced region, Gir Jungle Trail travels across the deciduous forest and serves as a natural habitat for wildlife including vultures and pythons.

There are marsh crocodiles and birds, such as Indian skimmers and pelicans, in the Kamleshwar Dam.

2.Blackbuck National Park, Velavadar

Located in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, this national park is famous for the blackbucks but is also home to fox, Macqueen’s bustard, lesser florican, etc.

3.Marine National Park, Gulf of Kutch

It is situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of Kutch in the district of Dwarka in Gujarat. The major wildlife supported by this national park includes sponges, corals, jellyfish, seahorse, octopus, pearl oyster, starfish, lobster, and dolphin.

4.Vansda National Park

Covered with thick woodlands of the Dangs and southern Gujarat, this national park at Navsari district of Gujarat is home to leopard, hyena, deer, and chausingha.

Wildlife Sanctuaries in Gujarat:

1.Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary

It is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat by area and is one of the four sanctuaries in Kutch district of Gujarat. With an area of 7506.22 sq. km, it is a sanctuary for chinkara, hyena, fox, flamingo, pelicans and other waterfowl and herpetofauna.

2.Wild Ass Sanctuary

It is located in the Little Rann of Kutch and houses chinkara, nilgai, blackbuck, onager(wild ass) wolf, fox, Macqueen’s bustard, waterfowl, and herpetofauna.

It is also known as Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary.

3.Gir Wildlife Sanctuary & National Parks

Also known as Sasan Gir, this Sanctuary is situated near Somnath to the south-west, Junagadh to the north-west, and Amreli to north-east.

Its natural habitat includes protection for lions, leopards, chausinga, chital, hyena, sambar, chinkara, herpetofauna, crocodiles and various birds.

4.Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary

Sharing its borders with Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, this sanctuary lies in the western Satpura Range south of the Narmada river.

The flora here is rich in deciduous and riverine forests with some teak trees and even a few agricultural fields.

It is home to various animals including Sloth bear, leopard, rhesus macaque, chausinga, barking deer, pangolin, herpetofauna, and birds including Alexandrine parakeet, grey jungle fowl, red jungle fowl, crested serpent eagle, shikra, sparrow hawk, great horned owl and grey hornbill.

5.Balaram Ambaji Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary falls in the area of Banas and Sabarmati rivers in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat. It shares its border with the state of Rajasthan.

It is home to 483 species of plants which include 10 species of lower plants, 49 of climbers, 40 of grass, 219 of herbs, 58 of shrubs and 107 of trees.

The fauna includes sloth bear, striped hyena, Indian leopard, Nilgai (blue bull), Indian porcupine, Indian fox, small Indian civet, Indian pangolin,  snakes (venomous and non-venomous), Indian star tortoises,  monitor lizards, etc.

6.Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary

Also known as Narayan Sarovar Wildlife Sanctuary or Narayan Sarovar Chinkara Sanctuary, it is a sanctuary near the Narayan Sarovar in the Kutch district of Gujarat.

It is only one of its kind desert forests in entire India. It inhabits some rare animals including cheetah, and the most seen animal here is chinkara. You can also spot some green day, desert cat, hyena, desert fox, jackal and birds.

7.Marine Sanctuary

It is part of the Marine National Park situated near Jamnagar coast of Gujarat.

The coast has around 42 islands including the best known Pirotan island, all surrounded by coral reefs.

You can find many species of sponges, corals, jellyfish, sea horse, octopus, oyster, pearl oyster, starfish, dolphin, dugong, and waterfowl here.

8.Barda Wildlife Sanctuary

Barda Sanctuary is located 15 km away from the Porbandar district of Gujarat. The mostly tropical and mixed deciduous forests are home to the blue bull, chinkara, blackbuck, and wolf.

9.Purna Wildlife Sanctuary

It is situated in the Western Ghats mountain range, sharing borders with the Maharashtra state of India.

This sanctuary in Dangs district supports leopards, barking deer, macaques, four-horned antelope, sambhar, hyena, herpetofauna, birds and has around 700 species of plants and trees.

10.Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary

It is situated in the Jambughoda Tehsil of Panchmahal district of Gujarat.

It is primarily a teak and bamboo forest among other species of flora and is inhabited by large colonies of Indian flying fox, sloth bear, leopard, jungle cat, hyena, wolf, four-horned antelope, herpetofauna, birds.

11.Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

Situated to the west of Ahmedabad, this bird sanctuary has a 120 sq. km lake and marshes all around.

It is one of the largest wetland bird sanctuaries in India and the largest bird sanctuary in Gujarat, chiefly inhabited by birds migrating in winter and spring seasons.

It is home to flamingos, pelicans, coot, ducks, waders, storks, herons and other waterfowl herpetofauna including some mammals like the endangered blackbuck and wild ass.

12.Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary

Surrounded by marshes and scrubby forest, this shallow freshwater sanctuary is home to cranes, geese, flamingos, Sarus and about 125 other waterfowl species.

It is situated 20 km from Ahmedabad. The best time to visit the sanctuary is in the winter season. The flora and fauna in the area create a mesmerizing view.

13.Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary

Home to sloth bear, leopard, hyena, birds and other herpetofauna, this sanctuary is located in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat.

The forest is covered with arid to semiarid and dry deciduous thorny scrub.

14.Ratanmahal Sloth Bear Sanctuary 

It is located in the Dahod district of Gujarat inhabited by a sloth bear, leopard, hyena, jackal, chausinga, civet cat, jungle cat, birds and herpetofauna.

15.Pania Wildlife Sanctuary

Pania Sanctuary is an integral part of the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary. It is widely known as Chanchai-Pania and is rich in birdlife.

The flora includes desi baval, Khair, gorad, hermo, bordi, dhav, saladi, ashitro, dudhlo, khakhro, modad, Lantana Camara, bamboo, karamda etc. and the fauna comprises Lion, Hyena, Leopard, Wildcat, Civet cat, Spotted deer, Chinkara, Wild boar, Four-horned antelope, pangolin, Blue bull, etc. It is situated in Amreli district of Gujarat.

16.Rampara Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary in Morbi district of Gujarat is home to the blue bull, chinkara, wolf, fox, jackal, birds, herpetofauna. The land here is shrubby and it is surrounded by hillocks on the fringes mark.

17.Hingolgadh Sanctuary

The lush green field of the sanctuary in Hingolgadh contrasts strongly with the arid zone of the surrounding Saurashtra area.

The tropical grassland ecosystem is a peculiar lair for a wide range of animals and reptiles, which is characterized by the spread of high grasses between trees and shrubs.

The Jungle is filled with animated fervour due to the presence of Chinkara, Blue bull, Wolf, Foxes, Indian Porcupine, Hare and Hyena, and flying foxes and such.

Over the course of the year, nearly 230 different birds make this area their home. Native birds, like Red-vented Bulbul, Green bee-eater, Spotted Dove, WoodPecker, fly and nest across the region.

18.Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

Situated 12 km from Jamnagar district of Gujarat, Bird-watchers can enjoy the fabulously diverse ecosystem.

The marshy areas and mangroves, Prosopis, mudflats, salt pans, streams, forest scrub, sandy beaches and farms bordering the area are also present alongside marine and freshwater habitats.

Together, the ecosystems offer shelters for more than 220 resident and migratory species of birds.

Ornithologists can train binoculars and cameras at endangered species, such as Dalmatian Pelican, Asian Openbill Stork, Black-Necked Stork, Darter, Black-headed Ibis, Eurasian spoonbill, and Indian Skimmer. 

On fortunate days, avian enthusiasts can find many of these rare birds.

19.Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary

Falling under the Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat, Gaga is one of the few areas to find several major birds.

This sanctuary is visited during winter by a wide range of birds, such as pelicans, spot-billed ducks, flamingoes, demoiselle cranes and common cranes.

It supports rare and endangered species such as Houbara Bustard, Indian Wolf and others. There are 12 mammal species, 8 reptile species and 88 bird species.

Invertebrates are also present in the sanctuary, such as butterflies, moths, honey bees, wasps, spiders, and termites.

20.Kutch Bustard Sanctuary

This is one of two major Indian bustard sanctuaries in Gujarat and is also known as the Lala-Parjan Sanctuary; the other sanctuary is in Jamnagar.

The best time to visit is the rainy season to the end of winters. The ideal way to enjoy the barn of nature is to take a walk and befriend various Bustard species.

You can find the Black and Gray Francolin, the Spotted and Indian Sandgrouse, Quails, Larks, Shrikes, Coursers and Plovers if you look around.

And if you’re fortunate, you can catch a glimpse of the rare Stolicska’s Bushchat and the White-naped Tit.

In winters, if you continue to go north towards the shoreline of Jakhau, large flocks of flamingos, herons, egrets, sandpipers and other birds living in the salt reservoirs and in the waterfront may welcome you.

21.Porbandar Bird Sanctuary

Situated in the heart of the city of Porbandar, it is the only sanctuary in India that provides a unique example of coexistence between mankind and nature.

The sanctuary covers an area of only 1 sq. km, making it the smallest bird sanctuary. The lake in the sanctuary draws migratory birds and other birds, like teals, flamingos, ibis and curlews.

22.Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary

Located near Mitiyala in the Amreli district, this sanctuary is also known as Mitiyala Grasslands.

It is well-known for its rustic, untouched nature of a hillside surrounded by large grasses, semi-dry deciduous trees, and is almost like an offshoot of the Gir Lion Sanctuary. It is home to Lion, Blue bull, Chittal, Chinkara, and Panther.

23.Girnar  Wildlife Sanctuary

The Girnar Hills are known for being a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Jains in Gujarat’s Junagadh District since ancient times.

Trees, climbers, twiner species, creepers and parasite species are available in the Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary. There are also 179 species of birds, 33 of reptiles, and 30 of mammals.

Other Protected Areas In Gujarat:

  1. Kachchh Biosphere Reserve known for Indian wild ass.
  2. Chhari Dhand Conservation Reserve known for wetland birds.
  3. Banni Grasslands Reserve known for Wetland birds, Houbara bustard, Chinkara, raptors like Tawny Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Greater Spotted Eagle, Imperial Eagle and Steppe Eagle.

All three protected areas are located in the Kutch region of Gujarat.

1.Gandhinagar

It is the administrative capital of the state. It’s famous for its Akshardham Temple. The city has gardens, wide avenues with trees, beautiful temples, markets and many other facilities planned. It is second among the planned Green Cities in India. It is named after the “Father of the Nation”, Mahatma Gandhi, who was born and raised in Gujarat.

2.Ahmedabad

12.Kutch

It is famous for its Great Rann of Kutch which is a huge desert of white salt, surrounded by the Thar desert. Kutch is also known for its creative handicraft goods.

13.Bhuj

Bhuj is renowned for its narrow alleys, beautiful palaces and temples. The oldest museum in Gujarat is also located here. Not only is it famous for various places of interests, but is also famous for embroidery and other traditional handicrafts.

14.Saputra

It is best-known for providing trekking and boating activities. People travel here to witness the beauty of the countryside and the mountains. Some of the famous attractions include Louisa Point, Charlotte Lake and King George Point.

15.Dholavira

It is one of the most prominent archaeological sites in India, located at Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District. The site contains ruins of an ancient Indus Valley Civilization/Harappan city, also known locally as Kotada timba. It is located on the Tropic of Cancer and is one of the five largest Harappan sites.

In Jamnagar district of Gujarat, it is an Arabian Sea island in the Marine National Park. It consists of mangroves and low-tide beaches.

The beach of Dandi is one of the cleanest Arabian beaches. Historically Dandi Beach is notable since Mahatma Gandhi carried salt satyagraha from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi. This is the beach where, after the Salt March, Mahatma Gandhi broke the British salt tax law.

19.Girnar

The mountain ranges in Girnar are known to be older than the Himalayas. The Jain temples situated here are among the most ancient temples in India. It is also the Nirvana bhumi for 22nd Tirthankara Lord Neminatha. At the height of 3666 feet, it is one of the most striking mountains in India.

36.Wankaner

Wankaner is a town known for its royal lineage and monuments, located on the bending point of the Macchu River in Gujarat. 40.Sardar Sarovar Dam

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a huge gravity dam built on the Narmada River, situated near Navagam Gujarat. It was engineered to preserve water and to help people and the environment. In 1961, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation of the project. In 1979, the construction for this project was initiated. Today, this dam contributes to supplying the neighbouring villages with drinking water as well as water for irrigation and hydro-power for the entire Gujarat region.

1.The Uttarayan

During the month of June, entire India including Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar of Gujarat celebrates Rath Yatra which is a festival associated with Lord Jagannath.

5.The Navratri Festival

In the month of September/October, all cities and villages of Gujarat celebrate the 10 days Navratri festival. During the festival, people worship Hindu Goddesses. People of all ages, especially the youth enjoy performing the dance form called Ras Garba during the night. 

6.The Rann Utsav (desert festival)

Things To Do In Gujarat

Shatrunjaya hill1.Ride The Royal Orient Train – it is one of the most exotic trains in the world. It is the rare delight to travel by the Royal Orient Train.
